Trip Overview
At Wilderness Adventures, we believe that summer should never end. We love the learning, growing and adventuring that comes with a summer season in the outdoors. In the spring, summer, and fall of each year, we are proud to offer more exciting adventures with the Wilderness Adventures Leadership Institute (WALI). Designed for college aged students yearning for an impactful learning opportunity, our WALI Gap Semester Programs will challenge you in new and exciting ways. Spend your semester learning and improving upon your outdoor skills, expanding your leadership capabilities, exploring some of the most beautiful wilderness areas in the Unites States, and gaining certifications that you will use for the rest of your life. Join like-minded students on an adventure that takes you away from the virtual, and into the real world.
Activity Highlights
Spend 42 days with Wilderness Adventures exploring the magnificent Rocky Mountain region during our summer semester program. Starting in Salt Lake City and ending in Jackson Hole, the group will hit the trail by day 3 (after a brief orientation period) to get the most out of this semester of growth, challenge, and fun. The group’s grand adventure will include:
- 4 days backpacking in Grand Staircase Escalante
- 7 day Wilderness First Responder (WFR) course
- 3 day backpacking in the Needles
- 1 day exploring Arches National Park
- 5 days rafting Desolation Canyon
- 7 days working with WA trips as a Trip Leader Intern
- 4 days whitewater kayaking and Swift Water Rescue Training
- 1 day Service Project
- 1 day (not overnight) Jackson Peak solo experience
Between each section, the group will have time to regroup, resupply food and other necessities, take showers, and prepare for their next adventure. Every night on this program (whether in the frontcountry or backcountry), the group will camp in tents with occasional access to running water. This is a rustic wilderness experience that shares the best of the Rockies with students while providing opportunities for challenge and growth!
