Itinerary

Arriving in the mountain town of Bozeman, Montana, you’ll feel immediately steeped in the sportsman and fishing culture of the region. You’ll meet up with your leaders and the rest of your excited group at the airport before making the short drive to your first night’s campsite in the Gallatin National Forest. There, you’ll set up your tents and make dinner together for the first time before crawling into bed under the stars in Big Sky country. The next morning, you’ll wake up early to embark on an introductory day of whitewater rafting. The Gallatin River is known for its exciting rapids and beautiful views which you’ll experience while shooting down the river in your paddle rafts.

The next day you’ll finally get your lines wet; you’ll begin a customized in-the-field fishing seminar. In this two-day seminar, you’ll learn both basic and advanced fly fishing techniques that will get you ready and fuel your excitement for the upcoming backcountry fishing sections of your adventure. During this informal and fun experience, you’ll also learn about fish ecology, fly fishing ethics, and how to protect this beautiful habitat. Whether you’re a new or experienced fisherman, you’ll take a great deal of knowledge and enjoyment from your time spent learning from expert local guides.

With the knowledge of seasoned anglers under your belt, you will head into the Anaconda Pintlers Wilderness, one of the jewel mountain ranges of the northern Rockies. First, you’ll have a day to prep for your first backcountry section, meal planning, grocery shopping, and divvying up group gear as a team. You’ll fish the Big Hole River, and then hit the trail for four days and 3 nights of backcountry bliss. In the mountains, you’ll experience the high, rugged scenery of the real Montana as you cast into some of the most famous fly fishing streams in the country. In addition to practicing your fishing skills, you will also learn the basics of backcountry living including Leave No Trace principles, map and compass navigation, and more.

Your second backcountry experience promises to be even more amazing than the first. You will set your sites towards Yellowstone National Park and world-famous fishing sights such as The Fire Hole River and the Lamar Valley. You’ll quickly become accomplished anglers as you pull fish after fish out of these trout-filled streams. Of course, you’ll also take some time to visit many of Yellowstone’s iconographic geothermal features and other amazing sights. In addition to the geysers, wildlife, and other wonders you’ll see while out fishing, you’ll also visit Old Faithful, Mammoth Hot Springs, and the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone.

As a fitting culmination to a once-in-a-lifetime journey, you and your group will spend your final days of the trip fishing the esteemed Madison River. At this point, you’ll be able to scout out all of the best sports and “secret” eddies.

The next morning, you’ll return to Bozeman to take in the local flavor of the town, walk along the old main street shops, and enjoy an ice cream before sitting down to your traditional end-of-adventure banquet. Here, you’ll recount the journey’s greatest catches, savor wonderful food, and appreciate each other’s company for one last evening. On the final morning of your journey, you’ll rise early to head to the airport together for your emotional goodbyes and safe return flights home.
