COVID-19 Update

May 13, 2020

Please find a statement from owners and directors, Tom and Catherine Holland, below regarding 2020 summer operations. Additionally, read Tom’s personal reflection here.

At Wilderness Adventures, we view each trip as an opportunity for personal growth. This mission is a personal one for our family. Twenty-five years ago, I came out of my shell and learned to dream big on my WA trip. Madeleine, our oldest daughter, has increased her confidence and grown as a young leader through her WA programs. We deeply regret when anything gets in the way of sharing this vital experience with students from around the world each summer.

This year has presented us with a unique set of challenges that go well beyond any obstacle we have faced in the past. COVID-19 has had a devastating impact on lives around the world and has changed our way of thinking and operating. Our foremost consideration is the safety and well-being of all of our students.

We have remained vigilant in our monitoring of the ever-evolving circumstances. The last few months have challenged us to try and come up with creative solutions for how we could continue to run these programs while maintaining our commitment to safety as well as the core features of a WA trip. Unfortunately, the risks presented by this disease, this summer, have proven too difficult to overcome. These circumstances have caused us to realize that we have no choice but to cancel ALL OF OUR TRIPS PROGRAMS for the 2020 summer.

This is a hard decision for our small business, our year-round team, and for us personally. But it is an easy decision when it comes to protecting those associated with our program and the communities we operate in. We are so very sorry it has come to this. We know that kids need these experiences now more than ever and we prepare all year for the magic of summer with our students.

Our family extends beyond our immediate household. It encompasses all of our WA families. We have felt that sense of community more than ever over the past few weeks with the outpouring of support and encouragement from around the country. The WA family is in our thoughts and we hope that you remain safe and healthy.
