Enter Africa

By Wilderness Adventures February 6, 2013

Students on our Kilimanjaro and Tanzania Service adventures make a meaningful impact while exploring a rich culture and benefiting from substantive time spent in a whole new world. For our 41st summer season, Wilderness Ventures is offering two amazing adventures on the African continent in Kenya and Tanzania.

The 20-day Mount Kilimanjaro Adventure offers students the opportunity to climb the tallest and most famous peak in Africa. Additionally, students lend a helping hand to local African villagers, work with both elephants and giraffes in special wildlife sanctuaries and enjoy a traditional African safari on the Serengeti. At 19,341 feet, Mount Kilimanjaro is one of the planet’s most impressive climbs — a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for anyone of any age, and certainly a uniquely special experience for someone in their high school years. Sharing in the legacy of countless Wilderness Ventures alumni who have summited some of the most amazing peaks on the globe, our group will climb and camp over seven amazing days to reach this spectacular summit, celebrating their accomplishments and their friendships on the rooftop of the continent.

Our Tanzania Service Adventure provides a diverse exploration and social contribution to the most beautiful environments imaginable. The important service work that we’ll perform here allow us to make meaningful contributions and connections to the agrarian, semi-nomadic communities of rural Tanzania. Importantly, it also offers a rare glimpse into village life. Our integrated experience will have us working alongside local villagers on much-needed infrastructural projects while learning about the beauty of Swahili traditions and customs. In the evenings, we’ll enjoy playing with the village’s children over a game of soccer or while teaching basic conversational English. In addition to our village service work, we’ll learn about the ecology and the environments of Tanzania while exploring the Ngorongoro Conservation Area; while working with Reptiles in a special snake preservation park; and while spotting lions, leopards, elephants, rhino and buffalo on a Serengeti Safari. For the culmination of our adventure, our group will travel to the enchanted island of Zanzibar to earn our PADI Open Water Scuba Certification during our special, private Scuba course.

Since 1973, Wilderness Ventures has introduced great young people to the outdoors on unforgettable, active adventures that are both appealing and growth inspiring. This year, for our 41st summer season, we are proud to launch Grand Earth Adventures — the global arm of Wilderness Ventures. Grand Earth Adventures are all about discovering amazing new landscapes while growing and having fun. As part of this summer’s historic program offering, we are proud to present these two adventure opportunities to Africa, as well as an amazing array of exciting adventures around the globe.
