Arrive into stunning Jackson Hole, Wyoming. From the moment you get off the plane, it will be clear that you’ve entered the country’s iconographic fly fishing destination. Your leaders will meet you and the rest of your excited trip mates at the airport, and you’ll make the short drive to your first campground, tucked into the Gros Ventre mountains of Grand Teton National Park. You’ll learn how to set up camp, play games, and get to know each other that first night. The next morning, you’ll wake up early for a fortifying breakfast before embarking on a fun day of whitewater rafting down the Snake River. You’ll grow closer as a team during this day’s exciting paddle as you work together to shoot thrilling rapids under the guidance of local instructors. After rafting, you’ll head into the town of Jackson to visit the National Fish Hatchery and learn more about the fish in this beautiful area. That night, you’ll head to your new campsite to cook a hearty evening meal and crawl into bed anticipating the next morning’s catch.
Teaming up with the world-famous Orvis fly fishing instructors, your group will engage in a special two-day fly fishing course tailored to the knowledge and experience level of each member of the group. You’ll learn basic and advanced casting techniques, water reading, nymphing, how to “play” trout, and other exciting skills. Of course, you’ll also gain an in-depth understanding of fish biology and the surrounding ecosystem that supports this fun sport. After your exciting course, you’ll be ready to apply your skills in the backcountry.
Moving north, you’ll migrate toward Yellowstone National Park, your first backpacking destination. You’ll travel shorter distances at first, allowing time to learn important backcountry travel skills that go hand in hand with fishing. You’ll cover basics such as cooking skills, minimum impact camping, and map and compass skills. And of course, you’ll have ample time to gaze at the verdant alpine meadows, abundant wildlife, and to fish for the infamous cutthroat for which Yellowstone is so well known. You will spend three days fishing the wilderness of Yellowstone and are sure to catch more fish than you can count! After hiking out of the wilderness on your last day, you’ll head to town for some quick showers, laundry, and other preparations for your next backpacking trip.
Your next excursion will take you to one of Wyoming’s most pristine wilderness areas, the Fitzpatrick Wilderness. Entering the backcountry wilderness allows you to access little-known and seldom-visited waters in pursuit of a larger and more bountiful catch. No experience can compare with the chance to travel under your own power between one backcountry fishing spot and the next. Together as a team, you’ll carry everything you need, cook your own tasty backcountry meals, camp in beautiful alpine meadows, and celebrate the day’s catch each evening. At the end of your four days in the wilderness, you’ll emerge as a fully formed and absolutely thrilled team. From here, you’ll return to Jackson Hole for your float trip.
Before heading back on the river, you’ll take a day to explore the iconic town of Jackson Hole. You’ll go for a day hike in the area to get your legs moving a bit. Then, as the culminating activity to what has been a fantastic journey, you’ll reunite with your Orvis guides and spend the day drift-boating down the rushing waters of the Snake River. Of course, the Orvis guides know all of the best, most fertile places to make the most of your time on the water. That evening, you’ll enjoy your very special final group banquet in Jackson Hole, taking these last moments together to celebrate your group’s accomplishments. The next morning, you’ll depart from the airport having grown both as individuals and as a team through the tremendous magic of your shared experience.
I feel that I had a ton of fun and I learned more and more about fishing.
